Lecture: Fungal Burial: Breaking Down After Life

My partner's brother suddenly died on July 4th of this year. His will read "Cremation is a waste of fire, and a waste of fertilizer. My burial wishes are as follows: I wish to be buried with a litany of fungi, chosen by John Michelotti that will process my flesh into nutrients."

The collaboration of talented artists, family, friends, and fungi lead to what we dubbed "the best worst party ever." In memory of Cliffy Clamp Hands, we'll draw Fungal connections around what it is to live and die with passion, grieve, and help friends process through the lessons of a natural burial.

First, he’ll talk about the attitudes of northern Native people toward fungi, then he’ll focus on the cold weather adaptations of certain northern species. Keynote Lecture: The Fungi Through the Flames: Understanding Fungi and Plant Community Responses to Fire
Last year saw record fires in the West and especially Colorado forests. This timely lecture will discuss fire, forest recovery, and the crucial role that fungi play. Camille Stevens-Rumann is an assistant professor of Fire Ecology at Colorado State University. She has worked in fire for almost 15 years both as a wildland fire fighter and a fire ecologist. She now spends much of her time in post-fire burned areas, hunting for both tree seedling and morels which are often abundant in recently burned areas. Her research focuses on post-fire recovery especially in the face of climate change.

Movie: “Psychedelia: The History and Science of Mystical Experience”
Psychedelia is a 60-minute documentary about psychedelic drugs and their ability to induce mystical experiences. This engaging film chronicles the scientific research studies prior to the cultural upheaval of the 1960s, when LSD was regarded as a promising medical breakthrough, to the present-day research in psychiatry, where leading experts in the field of psychedelic research have re-introduced these compounds into a legal and growing field of study.

Featuring leading experts in the field, the film takes viewers on a journey through the origins and resurgence of psychedelic research and explores the profound effects these mind-altering compounds have had on spirituality and culture throughout the ages. With first-person accounts from patients with end-of-life anxiety, this work explores the profound and life-altering insights psychedelics induce in participants, and the potential impact psychedelics hold for humanity.

Lecture: Entheogenic Mycolotry and Ethnomycology of Mesoamerica
Our current psychedelic renaissance owes a huge debt to ancient sacred practices held by numerous indigenous groups around the world. The Mesoamerican culture and history associated with sacred mushrooms from the genus Psilocybe is both fascinating as well as mysterious and holds an essential role in the evolution of Ethnomycology. This talk will focus on indigenous Mesoamerican spiritual and cultural uses of entheogenic mushrooms. Much of my emphasis will explore past research done by R. Gordon Wasson and other pioneers in Ethnomycology.

Lecture & Demo: Edible and Noteworthy Mushrooms, Part I. Identification, Made Simple
Ok you've had several days of mushrooming with the Festival experts. You went to the introductory lectures on mushrooming. You went on all the forays. You spent a lot of time at the ID tent learning from experts. You even ate some of the strange wild mushrooms...and survived! Is your head spinning? It may be the altitude. Or it may be that you're suffering from Mycophilia! This presentation will be part slide show of major mushroom groups, mostly pretty pictures with information on how to know what's what. Plus this will be part demo with live specimens for you to handle, smell, and review with experts.

Note that this demo will be up close and personal with the mushrooms in the very cozy and casual setting of the brand new Sheridan Bar. Plan to bring a coffee or grab a cocktail or beer from the bar! Earn brownie points: buy a beer or cocktail for your lecturer!

Lecture & Demo: Edible and Noteworthy Mushrooms, Part II. Taxonomy and Evolution, Made Simple
Ok you've done all the general mycology events and you have learned a ton on how to ID many of our wild mushrooms. You even attended Part I of Edible and Noteworthy Mushrooms. Now to put it all together and see why the species are named the way they are, grouped with others that may or may not look similar, and see how taxonomy has determined much about the evolution of the mushrooms from the region.

This demo will be up close and personal. Andrew Wilson is our Festival Mycologist from Colorado's Sam Mitchel Fungarium in Denver, and will be our main instructor. Our additional experts will construct a phylogenetic tree using many of the living specimens collected during the Festival and will point out features of each that allow us to know who is related to whom.

This presentation will be at the ID Tent.
